WOOD - CHARACTERISTICS
Tectona Grandis is native from the tropical
forests of Southeast Asia, occurring naturally between the
parallels 09ºN and 25ºN, in altitudes of 0 to 1.000m,
in locations with a rainfall between 500 and 5.000 mm and
temperatures varying from 2ºC to 48ºC.
Teak has aggressive bioecological characteristics, great rusticity
and optimal development, if the ideal conditions of climate
and soil for its cultivation are observed..
A very tall tree, it can reach a diameter of 2,5m and an altitude
of 50m in natural forests; the trunk is straight, has a circular
section and reduced conicity; cracked bark with a thickness
of 15mm and thermo-isolating characteristics, being fairly
fire resistant.
Large (60x80cm) and deciduous leaves (they fall off during
the dry season). The flowers are cream-colored,
small, numerous and gathered in panicular inflorescences.
The blooming is intense and begins about a month after the
first rainfalls, lasting for more than 60 days.
The
fruit is a drupe, measures 1 to 2 cm in diameter and may contain
up to 4 viable seeds.Teak is a species with pioneering habits,
occupying with great readiness the clearings opened within
the forest. It is also heliophilous, that is, it requires
exposition to sunlight and does not tolerate shadowing. Its
vertical growth is fast and reaches three meters during the
first year and five meters or more in the second year.
